Introduction

EPIC and LIANZA have collaborated to train up a network of skilled Trainers who are available to train colleagues both in their own organisation and in organisation(s) within their local regional areas.

Trainers, from a range of library sectors across NZ, are available to provide training in online skills. Their libraries are willing to release them to provide training in other libraries.

See also: background on the initiative

The training is a collaborative initiative and relies on libraries sharing their people, time and expertise.   The following guidelines are designed to support libraries and trainers to get the best value from the training.  Overall, the success of the training relies on the spirit of co-operation and sharing skills, knowledge and experiences.

Training Objectives and Content

The objectives of the EPIC LIANZA Training Intiative (ELTI) Training Package:

  • A quality training package which can be deployed or adapted by trainers to support local e-literacy learning needs
  • Building of the e-literacy skills required to use and manage e-resources
  • Increase in the confidence and knowledge staff require to effectively deliver e-resources to their user communities.

The ELTI Training package comprises:

1 GETTING TO KNOW THE ONLINE WORLD

1.1 Getting to Know the Online World – A Quick Tour

    1.2 Web Basics

    1.3 Evaluating Online Content

2 BECOMING A SEARCHER

    2.1 Topic Analysis & Mapping

    2.2 Searching The Web

    2.3 Searching Databases

    2.4 Which Online Resource?

Organising the Training

Libraries interested in receiving training should contact one of the trainers on the ELTI Trainers’ list.

The email should contain the following information:

  • Name of your library
  • Your name and contact details (as the main contact person)
  • Number of staff requiring training and your expectations for the content and level of training.
  • Details of available computing facilities (for hands-on training).
  • Suggested dates and times for training
  • What costs you are able to cover (see Costs below)

Trainers must obtain their managers’ permission before accepting requests for training outside of their organisations.   Once permission is confirmed the trainer will respond with details of availability and will discuss the scope and content of the training.  They will also conduct a needs assessment of the trainees in consultation with the receiving library’s contact person.

If the trainer is unavailable they will respond within three working days.

Libraries experiencing difficulty confirming a trainer should contact the EPIC Manager.

Costs

EPIC and LIANZA developed the content and the foundation training for this initiative.   Participating libraries will cover all other costs of the training.

All cost sharing details should be mutually agreed between the trainers’ library and the library receiving the training (Receiving Library).    As a general rule the Receiving Library should cover the costs of travel and accommodation, photocopying or printing of resources, equipment hire and/or catering.  The trainers’ library may also require payment for backfill for releasing the trainer.

If there is a case for hardship then the Receiving Library can contact the EPIC Manager to discuss additional support.  These decisions will be made on a case by case basis by a subgroup of the EPIC Governance Group.  In making decisions the subgroup will consider the following criteria:

  • any prior support provided by EPIC
  • extent of the contribution required
  • commitment of the library to support and extend the skills of their staff
  • EPIC’s ability to provide support

Who is Eligible for the Training

Preference for training should be to any EPIC member library

New Zealand Schools are supported by National Library’s School Services and can contact their local Service Centre for training enquiries (visit: http://www.natlib.govt.nz/about-us/contact-details/school-service-centre-contacts/ ).

However, Trainers and their libraries can use their discretion if they wish to provide training to New Zealand Schools or non EPIC members.
